The hub dynamo is a dynamo who is in the front hub and converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. Primarily serves the dynamo to power the lighting system of the bicycle. (In addition to the Dyamo can also charge mobile phones, batteries and other power consumers are used.)

Advantages

Hub dynamos are (opposite sidewall dynamos) less susceptible to defects that can occur due to moisture, dirt or incorrect settings. They are therefore considered reliable and low maintenance.

The efficiency of the hub dynamo is usually higher than the side of dynamos.
High-quality hub dynamo (for example the SON dynamo hubs are really well manufactured) cause little or no operating noises.

Even with the lights can not be powered from the hub dynamo means of an external circuit load (eg battery charger).
Hub dynamos make use of sensor lights that turn on automatically at dusk / night light.

Hub dynamos are independent of the dynamo mounting braze-ons and independent of a dynamo tread on the tire (which is not available in all Tires -> full selection of tires).

Disadvantages

Although there is a growing market for dynamo hubs, hub dynamos are still generally more expensive than conventional side Dynamos.

Hub dynamos are usually heavier than a side Dynamo variant in combination with a conventional hub.

Even without the lights are turned on almost all the resistance dynamo hub is greater than that of a conventional hub.

If several runners in the change are to be used on the bicycle, fall with a change of the wheel from the bicycle's light, unless there is at each wheel, a hub dynamo.
